Halloween ideas for 18-month-olds
Halloween hands a toddler a basket of new sensations: heavy round pumpkins, slimy insides, crinkly costumes, knocking on doors and lights in the dark. For this age most of the fun happens at home in the days before, rehearsing the routine and getting used to costumes, so the night itself feels familiar. Keep it short and gentle, and treat any scary moment as a chance to name a feeling. The 10 ideas below overlap the 18-23-month band, best fit for 18 months first.

How to do Spider Web Toy Rescue
Your child pulls soft toys out through a criss-cross painter's tape web over a laundry basket, working out which gaps are big enough. Words to model: stuck, pull, out, spider web. Keep tape out of the mouth and collect every piece when you finish.
-
Drop the toys in the basket and stretch tape across the top in a loose web.
-
Watch your child look for a way in; do not show the answer straight away.
-
If they get stuck, poke one finger through a gap and say "In here?"
-
Name each rescue, "Teddy is out!", and pause for them to try the next.
-
Let them peel the tape off at the end; that is a skill too.
More Halloween ideas at 18 months
The ideas written up here sit closest to 18 months; Pumpkin Drum Taps (13-18 mo), Costume Hat Mirror Peekaboo (12-18 mo), Pumpkin Puree Tray Painting (12-20 mo) and Orange and Black Basket Sort (22-32 mo) also overlap this age and are described on the neighboring age page.
-
Trick-or-Treat Door Practice
Your child rehearses the Halloween routine at home: knock on a bedroom door, wave when it opens, take one toy and say or sign thank you. Ages 16-24 months, 5-10 min, indoors. Start: ask a helper to wait behind a door with a toy, and walk there together with the pail. Say: knock, knock, hi, thank you. Safety: Practise with toys only, so your child does not expect a treat at every door.
-
Pumpkin Bath with a Sponge
Your child scrubs a muddy pumpkin in a shallow basin with a sponge, a real cleaning job that mixes water play with helping. Ages 18-25 months, 5-12 min, indoors or out. Start: set the basin on a towel on the floor or outside and put the pumpkin in it. Say: wash, squeeze, wet. Safety: Stay within arm's reach and empty the basin as soon as you finish.
-
Friendly Ghost Sheet Peekaboo
You sit under a light sheet and your child pulls it off to find you, a playful way to learn that a person stays the same under a costume. Ages 15-22 months, 3-8 min, indoors. Start: let your child watch you drape the sheet over your head, face showing at first. Say: boo, it's me, where?. Safety: Keep your child's turns under the sheet to a few seconds and lift it at any sign of upset.
-
Stick-On Pumpkin Faces
Your child sticks big paper eyes, nose and mouth onto a real pumpkin with tape loops, naming face parts while making a no-carve jack-o'-lantern. Ages 18-26 months, 5-10 min, indoors. Start: lay out the shapes, touch your own eyes and say "Eyes", then point to the triangles. Say: eyes, nose, mouth. Safety: Pre-make the tape loops so small scraps are not left on the floor.
-
Spider Crawl, Bat Climb
Your child crawls like a spider under a blanket tunnel and climbs over a cushion web, an indoor path with Halloween animal moves and position words. Ages 18-26 months, 5-12 min, indoors. Start: drape the blanket over the chair to make a tunnel and lay the cushions after it. Say: under, over, spider. Safety: Push the chair against a wall so it cannot tip.
Halloween safety for 18-month-olds
Seasonal hazards first, then the precautions of the ideas on this page. Stay within arm's reach whenever water, food or small decorations are involved.
- Sort every treat bag before your child sees it: hard candy, nuts, gum, popcorn, lollipops and tiny toys are choking hazards for toddlers, so swap them for a familiar snack.
- Masks block a toddler's view and feel stuffy; use a hat or hood instead, or face paint you have tested on a small patch of skin first.
- Keep costumes above the ankle, skip long capes, tails and anything tied around the neck, and look for a flame-resistant label.
- Light pumpkins with battery tea lights, not candles, and check that each battery cover is screwed shut: button batteries cause severe injury if swallowed.
- After dark, add reflective tape and a flashlight, hold hands or use the stroller, and go out early while there is still some daylight.
- Keep tape out of the mouth and collect every piece when you finish.
- Practise with toys only, so your child does not expect a treat at every door.
- Use an uncarved pumpkin so there is no cut edge or spoiling flesh.
