Fall ideas for 2-year-olds

Fall fills a toddler's world with crunchy leaves, apples, pinecones, wind and busy squirrels, so every walk brings new sounds, colors and textures. Cooler air adds a jacket-and-hat routine to getting out the door, and earlier evenings make cozy indoor play and books a bigger part of the afternoon. The 12 ideas below overlap the 24-36-month band, best fit for 2 years first.

How to do Leaf Pile Jump

Your child jumps with two feet into a small, checked pile of leaves, practicing a two-foot take-off and landing on a soft, crunchy target. Words to model: jump, bend, one, two, three, again. Search the pile before every round and keep it on soft grass, never on a path or near the street.

  1. Check the pile by hand for sticks, stones and anything hidden.

  2. Show a two-foot jump: bend your knees, 'one, two, three, jump!'

  3. Hold both hands for the first jump, then one, then none.

  4. Pause before 'jump' so they can say it or wait for it.

  5. Take turns jumping and rebuild the pile together after each round.

More fall ideas at 2 years

The ideas written up here sit closest to 2 years; Big Apple, Little Apple Sort (19-25 mo), Leaf Pile Helper (18-24 mo), Whose Warm Hat? (18-24 mo), Sticky Leaf Window Picture (18-24 mo) and Squirrel Run and Hide (18-24 mo) also overlap this age and are described on the neighboring age page.

  • Apple Taste Test Chat

Seated at the table, your child tastes thin slices of two kinds of apple and some soft cooked apple, describing crunchy, soft, sweet and sour in their own words. Ages 24-36 months, 5-10 min, indoors. Start: slice the apples very thin and set three small piles on a plate. Say: crunchy, soft, sweet. Safety: Peel and slice raw apple very thin or grate it: hard chunks are a choking hazard.

  • Pinecone Count Walk

On a fall walk your child collects five big pinecones into a bag, counting each one, then carries the bag home and lines them up to count again. Ages 26-36 months, 8-15 min, outdoors. Start: say 'let's find five pinecones' and hold up five fingers. Say: pinecone, how many?, five. Safety: Choose pinecones bigger than your child's fist and leave acorns, nuts and berries behind.

  • Crayon Leaf Rubbings

Your child rubs the side of a crayon over paper laid on a leaf and watches the veins and edges appear, a surprising link between their strokes and the picture. Ages 26-36 months, 5-15 min, indoors. Start: tape a leaf to the table, vein side up, and tape thin paper over it. Say: rub, leaf, lines. Safety: Collect broken crayon stubs and leaf bits so they stay out of the mouth.

  • Red, Yellow, Brown Leaf Sort

Your child sorts a pile of fall leaves into red, yellow and brown groups on three sheets of paper, then counts which group has the most. Ages 24-36 months, 5-12 min, indoors or out. Start: lay out three papers and put one leaf of each color on its own sheet. Say: red, yellow, brown. Safety: Check the basket for acorns, seeds, berries and mushrooms before play.

  • Apple Stamp Painting

You cut apples in half and your child dips them in paint and stamps big paper, finding the star of seeds inside and making a bold fall print. Ages 24-36 months, 8-15 min, indoors. Start: cut one apple across its middle and one from top to bottom, and show your child the star and the seeds inside. Say: press, star, red. Safety: You do all the cutting, and remove seeds and core pieces before handing the apple halves over.

  • Find a Leaf Like Mine

You hold up one leaf and your child searches the ground for another that matches its shape or color, practicing looking closely and comparing. Ages 20-26 months, 4-12 min, outdoors. Start: pick up one bright leaf and ask 'can you find one like this?' Say: same, different, leaf. Safety: Check hands and mouth for acorns, nuts, berries and small seeds from the ground.

Fall safety for 2-year-olds

Seasonal hazards first, then the precautions of the ideas on this page. Stay within arm's reach whenever water, food or small decorations are involved.

  • Acorns, nuts, small pinecones, berries and seeds turn up on every walk: check hands and mouths often, and keep collected finds bigger than your child's fist.
  • Wild mushrooms pop up on lawns after fall rain and some are poisonous: remove them before play and call your local poison control center if one is eaten.
  • Leaf piles can hide sticks, stones, animal waste and holes, and drivers cannot see a child in one: never let children play in piles near the street or driveway.
  • Remove drawstrings from hoods and jacket necks, and use a neck warmer instead of a long scarf that can catch on play equipment.
  • Hard raw apple chunks are a choking hazard for young toddlers: serve apples very thinly sliced, grated or cooked soft.
  • Search the pile before every round and keep it on soft grass, never on a path or near the street.
  • Peel and slice raw apple very thin or grate it: hard chunks are a choking hazard.
  • Choose pinecones bigger than your child's fist and leave acorns, nuts and berries behind.
