Caregiver split: parents on split shifts
One parent works a late shift and covers the morning, lunch and the nap; the other works an early shift and takes over mid-afternoon until bedtime, with a written handoff note bridging the change. 1 handoff at 28 months:
- 2:30 pm, Partner to Parent: the child has been awake 30 min, with 5 h to go until bedtime; afternoon snack is at 2:15 pm, so say what was already eaten.
How 28 months differs from 27 and 29 months
The 30-month visit is approaching and AAP recommends a general developmental screening there, so collect a few examples of new phrases, two-step directions and pretend play.
Compared with the 27-month sample: the nap starts earlier by 15 min, wake-up is earlier by 15 min, bedtime is earlier by 30 min, daytime sleep shrinks by 15 min to 1 h 30 min and lunch is earlier by 15 min.
Looking ahead to 29 months: wake-up is earlier by 15 min and total sleep falls by 15 min.
The 8 activities in this 28-month day
Active picks sit in the outdoor stretches, calm ones before sleep and a self-care skill at the main meals.
-
8:00 am, partner: Egg Carton Color Hunt
Active and outdoors: the core of the 8:00-9:30 am stretch. Before you go, color the bottom of a few cups: green, yellow, brown, red. On the walk, pick a green leaf, hold it by the green cup and say 'Green leaf, green cup.' Open the carton for your child and pause while they look around. Words to model: green, brown, same color. Watch for: holds a find next to a cup to compare colors. Safety: Collect only leaves and flat petals; leave berries, seeds, mushrooms and stones that fit through a toilet-paper tube on the ground.
-
9:30 am, partner: Knock-Knock Box House
Calm, a new domain for the day (language). Cut a door flap in a cardboard box and hide a stuffed animal inside while your child looks away. Knock on the box and ask in a curious voice, "Who's there?" Open the door slowly and act surprised: "It's the bear!" Words to model: Who's there?, What's inside?, knock knock. Watch for: knocks and waits for the door to open. Safety: Cut the door yourself away from your child, pull out staples and tape over rough edges.
-
10:00 am, partner: Knob Puzzle Peek and Name
Calm, a new domain for the day (fine motor). Lay the puzzle on a hard surface with all the pieces in place. Lift one piece by its knob, gasp and name the picture under it: "A duck! Quack." Put that piece back, then point to another knob and wait for your child to lift it. Words to model: under, in, the picture names. Watch for: pinches the knob with thumb and fingers to lift the piece. Safety: Check that every knob is firmly fixed, and put the puzzle away if one becomes loose; a loose knob is a choking hazard.
-
11:45 am, partner: Fork or Spoon? Dinner Choice
A mealtime skill practiced during lunch. Serve one food that needs a spoon and one that suits a fork. Lay both utensils beside the plate. Point to the runny food, ask "Fork or spoon?" and wait. Words to model: fork, spoon, runny. Watch for: picks the spoon for runny food. Safety: Toddler cutlery with blunt tines only, used seated at the table.
-
2:30 pm, parent: Chalk Road Car Trip
Active and outdoors: the core of the 2:30-4:00 pm stretch. It is also in the 27-month sample day; if the basic version is easy by 28 months, change one thing: add a red chalk circle where cars wait until you say "go". Watch for: drives to two places in the order asked. Words to model: go, next, store, home. Safety: Choose toy cars with fixed wheels and no small parts that come off.
-
4:00 pm, parent: When a Friend Cries: Helper Steps
Calm, a new domain for the day (social-emotional). When a sibling, cousin or playmate cries, stop what you are doing and look together. Name it quietly: "Your cousin is sad. He bumped his head." Pause and watch what your child does; many toddlers just stare, and that is a start. Words to model: sad, crying, help. Watch for: stops playing and looks at the crying child. Safety: Check first that the crying child is not hurt, and stay between the children if either is upset enough to hit or push.
-
5:30 pm, parent: Step-Stool Hand-Wash Song
A mealtime skill practiced during dinner. It is also in the 16-month and 21-month sample days; if the basic version is easy by 28 months, change one thing: hum instead of singing the words and let them keep rubbing. Watch for: reaches for the towel after rinsing. Words to model: soap, rub, dry. Safety: Use a stable stool with non-slip feet and stay right behind your child; never leave them on it alone.
-
6:00 pm, parent: Throw into the Hoop
Active, a new domain for the day (gross motor). Lay the hoop flat and put a tape line one big step away from it. Stand on the line and throw a sock ball into the hoop: "In!" Hand your child a ball and let them throw from the line, any style. Words to model: throw, in, out. Watch for: releases the ball toward the hoop rather than straight down. Safety: Throw only soft balls or rolled socks, and keep the area clear of breakables and other children.

How long should a 28-month-old nap?
In this sample the nap runs 1 h 30 min, from 12:30-2:00 pm, leaving 11 h 30 min for the night (13 h in total).
How long between naps for a 28-month-old?
With one nap there is no gap between naps: the child is awake 5 h 30 min before the nap and 5 h 30 min after it, until bedtime at 7:30 pm.
What time should a 28-month-old go to bed?
This sample uses 7:30 pm, which leaves 11 h 30 min of night sleep before a 7:00 am wake-up. If your child wakes at a different time, move bedtime by the same amount.
